Member Collaboration in Nu Rho Chapter: A History of the Nursing Schools of Nu Rho Chapter

This project is a collaborative effort among Nu Rho members to tell the histories of the schools that make up our At-Large-Chapter. An appreciation of the hard work of those who first formed our schools is acknowledged by these members who wrote of our early beginnings. Without these early beginnings, Nu Rho Chapter-At-Large would not exist as we know it today. We salute our history! A special thank you to Debbie Eno, Becke Voight, Shirley Retzlaff and Nancyruth Leibold who worked on this project!

Union College

Union College was the first college in Nebraska and in the Seventh-day Adventist denomination to offer a baccalaureate degree in nurse. The four-year program began in 1946 and graduated its first nursing class in 1949. With its principle clinical facility in Denver, it was distinguished as being one of the few nursing programs to have its campus in two different states. It was called the Union College School of Nursing but later it became the Division of Nursing. From the Program’s inception it was registered with the Colorado State Board of Nurse Examiners and by the Nebraska Bureau of Education and Registration of Nurses. In 1981 the Colorado campus was vacated and the entire program moved to Lincoln. The Nursing Program became a charter member of the National League for Nursing (NLN) Department of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs in 1952 and maintained continuous approval until 2001. In the spring of 2001, the Nursing Program was granted accreditation from the commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and continues to maintain that accreditation. Nebraska Wesleyan University

The RN-BSN nursing program at NWU started in 1982 with Dr. Patricia Morin as sole faculty member. Bonnie Zaroban was the second faculty member hired! Dr. Morin continued as Nursing Department Chair for 21 years until 2003. The NWU MSN program was developed and originated during her tenure. University College formed shortly after Dr. Morin resigned and Dr. Stacey Ocander was appointed Department Chair of the Health Sciences Department which included nursing and athletic training. Dr. Jeri Brandt was the Nursing Program Director. Nursing moved to Burt Hall where it resides presently with the other graduate programs, Forensic Science, History and Organizational Communication. The nursing programs are also offered in Omaha on the campus on 120th and L Streets. (Nebraska Wesleyan University submitted by Nu Rho member: Becke Voight)

BryanLGH College of Health Sciences

In 1922 William Jennings Bryan gave his home, Fairview, and surrounding land to the Nebraska Conference of the Methodist Church for the purpose of establishing a new hospital in Lincoln. With his gift and others, Bryan Memorial Hospital opened a 60 bed hospital on June 6, 1926. The Bryan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing also opened in 1926 and enrolled 37 students during that year. Since that time, Bryan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing has grown from a diploma in nursing program, into BryanLGH College of Health Sciences, granting baccalaureate and graduate degrees in nursing and health professions, The College continues to enjoy a close clinical partnership with BryanLGH Medical Center which is now a 620 bed regional healthcare center. The College has maintained the goal of clinical and academic excellence that was emphasized by its founders and continues to prepare nurses, healthcare professionals and lifelong learners with skills, awareness, interest and concern for health care and the human condition. Research Grant Proposal

Application Guidelines: Deadline, April 1 of each year

General Guidelines and Information
1. Applicants must be current members of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), Nu Rho Chapter.
2. Applicants must have a baccalaureate or higher degree in nursing and be approved to conduct the proposed study.
3. The purpose of these grants is to support research by qualified nurses and/or graduate nursing students who are engaged in a program of research to advance knowledge in the science of nursing.
4. Award amounts may range from up to $599. The award money is to be utilized to support direct costs of the research project. The funding period is for one year from the receipt of the award. If an extension is necessary, a letter requesting the amount of additional time required must be sent to the Chair/ Co-Chair of the Research Committee. Only requests for non-funded extensions will be considered.
5. Accountability regarding the recipient’s use of the award is primarily through direct communication between the recipient and the Nu Rho Research Committee Chair. In addition, presentation of research findings to the membership of Nu Rho and publication of research abstract in the Nu Rho Newsletter are strongly encouraged.
6. Institutional Review Board (IRB) (or agency or college) approval must be obtained.
7. Grant Proposal Committee: The application will be reviewed by a panel of three to include the Chair of the Research Committee plus two additional committee members appointed by the board of Nu Rho Chapter, STTI. To facilitate an anonymous review process, please submit one copy with the applicant’s name, curriculum vitae, and signed agreement and three copies omitting the applicant’s name, curriculum vitae, and signed agreement.

Grant Application Guidelines
1. Incomplete applications or applications not prepared according to the guidelines will not be reviewed.
2. The narrative portion of the application is not to exceed 6 single-spaced pages using 12-point Times New Roman, Arial, or Courier font with no less than ½ inch margins.
3. APA format is preferred. Use of a consistent format for in-text citations and references is required.

BryanLGH College of Health Sciences is honored to join Union College and Nebraska Wesleyan University as the colleges that comprise Nu Rho at-large. To officially add BryanLGH College to our chapter, we will hold a Charter Amendment Ceremony in conjunction with the induction of undergraduate and graduate students from all three colleges, and the induction of Nurse Leaders and transfer members. Our honored guest speaker that evening will be Dr. Karen Morin, President of Sigma Theta Tau International.

Good News! BryanLGH Nursing Joins Nu Rho Chapter!

Although faculty and students at the BryanLGH School of Nursing have always been active in the STT Nu Rho Chapter, it is now official! STTI voted to amend the Nu Rho Chapter with the addition of the BryanLGH School of Nursing.

This is great news for Nu Rho Chapter.

There will be a formal chartering ceremony in February of 2010. Watch for details about the date, time, and location of this important event!!

Nu Rho Chapter Wins Key Award

Nu Rho Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International was been awarded with the prestigious Chapter Key Award. Dr Kay Maize accepted the award at STT convention in November 2009. The award is given to a chapter based on chapter and individual member accomplishments. Sharon Fusco and Nancyruth Leibold started the application process early in 2009. Information from individual members, Bryan College of Nursing, Nebraska Wesleyan University, and Union College was collected and sorted into the criteria set by STTI for the award. The final application was written by Nancyruth Leibold and submitted to STTI on behalf of the chapter. "It truly is a statement of how highly professional and active our chapter members are in nursing" commented Leibold.

Speakers:
Dr. Evelyn McKnight is a practicing audiologist in Fremont, Nebraska. Evelyn is one of ninety-nine cancer survivors who contracted hepatitis C through substandard medical care at the Fremont Cancer Center in 2000-2001. She is one of the founders of HONOReform and the HONOReform Foundation. Evelyn has been featured on a number of national news outlets including CBS News, CNN, USA Today, and Newsday. Evelyn is also a co-author of A Never Event, which chronicles the story of the Nebraska hepatitis C outbreak. www.HONOReform.org

Dr. Marilyn Valerio is the associate dean of nursing at Nebraska Methodist College- The Josie Harper Campus. Dr. Valerio taught and practiced in maternal-child nursing and community health. She was appointed to the Nebraska Center for Nursing Board in 2003 and serves as the current Chairperson. In this role, Dr. Valerio is also involved in the Nebraska Deans and Directors where nursing practice and education are key issues.

The purpose of this document is to provide a framework for the board of directors and officers to use when learning roles and responsibilities for the Nu Rho Chapter-At-Large. This should ease transition of new officers as they will have a document they can refer to and may also contact the previous member who held that office for assistance. Officer Job Descriptions

President

Qualifications:

* Active member in the chapter

* Consent to serve in the position

Responsibilities:

* Act as the executive officer and administrator of all business of the chapter as stated in the bylaws.

* Serve as chief representative of the chapter in inter-chapter activities.

* Ensure chapter participation in the biennial convention House of Delegates and other business brought forth before the House of Delegates during the term.

* Prepare a calendar and agenda for all Board of Directors and general membership meetings with assistance as needed from the secretary.

* Finalize the committee appointments recommended by the Board of Directors for all committees, advisory councils or task forces.

* Delegate responsibilities not otherwise handled by the chapter bylaws to the chapter officers or committees.

* Communicate the business, projects and activities of the Board of Directors to the membership.

* Ensure at least one business meeting and at least two programs or events that support the purposes and goals of the honor society are held during each fiscal year.

* Arrange an orientation meeting, following the annual membership meeting, for all newly installed officers and committee chairs. The purpose is to facilitate the transfer of duties and responsibilities and to formulate the goals of the chapter for the coming year.

* Ensure all reports are submitted to headquarters in a timely manner. Reports include: chapter annual report, verification of fees report (when applicable) and the chapter officer/committee chair report.

* Develop and maintain policies and procedures related to the position of president. Submit modifications or new policies and procedures to the board of directors for approval.

* Plan for officer transition.

*Coordinate strategic Directions for the chapter with in the input of previous and current board of directors and officers. Write goals for each year with input and ask board for approval. (See Chapter on Strategic Planning for Chapter)

President-Elect

Qualifications:

* Be an active member of the chapter

* Consent to serve in the position

Responsibilities:

* May succeed into the presidency at the end of a one- or two-year term of office.

* Communicate to the public the purposes of the society.

* Be chair of committees, as needed.

* Learn the chapter operations and facilitate the achievement of chapter goals and mission of Sigma Theta Tau International.

* Oversee the process for completing and submitting the Chapter Key Award application.

*Serves as the Governance Chair (see Governance Chair role)

Vice President

Qualifications:

* Be an active member of the chapter

* Consent to serve in the position

Responsibilities:

* Perform the duties of the president in the president's absence.

* Be chair of committees, as needed.

* Succeed into the office of president and serve until the next election in the event that the president vacates his/her officer during the two-year term.

* Prepare an annual report to the chapter membership regarding the vice-president's responsibilities and activities.

* Oversee the planning of chapter programs ensuring that at least two programs or events that support the honor society's purposes and goals are held each year.

Secretary

Qualifications:

* Be an active member of the chapter

* Consent to serve in the position

Responsibilities:

* Record and write the minutes for each Board of Directors and business meeting.

* Distribute minutes to all members of the Board of Directors.

* Keep an official record book of the minutes of all Board of Directors and business meetings to present to the succeeding secretary.

* Prepare an annual report to the chapter membership.

* Submit the list of new officers to headquarters within two weeks of officer elections and provide headquarters with updates as they occur.

* Order all stationery, forms and mailing labels for the chapter.

* Type and mail chapter correspondence.

* Send membership invitations to all elected candidates, in cooperation with the Governance Committee.

* Serve on committees as needed.

*Maintain records of all online/email votes and results.

Treasurer

Qualifications:

* Be an active member of the chapter

* Consent to serve in the position

Responsibilities:

* Be custodian of the chapter funds.

Maintain bank account and signature card for bank account

* Prepare and present a current financial report to the board of directors at each meeting.

* Prepare and submit an annual budget to the board of directors with appropriate committee advisory council or task force.

* Prepare and submit the financial section of the chapter annual report.

* Work with an accountant on the biennial audit and submit a copy to headquarters.

* Obtain and complete necessary tax forms for the Internal Revenue Service (US chapters only).

* Manage the investment plan of the chapter with support from the board of directors.

* Develop and maintain fiscal policies and procedures in collaboration with the appropriate committee. Submit new policies or modifications of existing policies to the board of directors for approval.

Faculty Counselor

Qualifications:

* Be an active member of the chapter

* Consent to serve in the position

* Be on faculty at the institution of higher education for which the faculty counselor will represent

Responsibilities:

* May serve as the chair of the Governance Committee.

* Lead the procedure for determining membership eligibility and inducting members.

* Develop strategies for publicizing and informing students and nursing leaders of membership eligibility criteria. May work in conjunction with the Membership Involvement Committee.

* Secure necessary data from the official records of students to determine eligibility status. Notify students of their eligibility status and send out the appropriate membership application materials.

Archivist

Qualifications:

* Be an active member of the chapter

* Consent to serve in the position

Responsibilities:

* Oversee the filing and/or preservation of committee meeting minutes.

* Manage the collection and preservation of statistics, documents, individual contributions and other information of historical significance for the chapter.

* Oversee the process of developing and maintaining a written history of the chapter, which is annually reviewed and updated.

Governance Committee Chair (The President-Elect in Nu Rho Chapter)

Qualifications:

* Be an active member of the chapter

* Consent to serve in the position

Responsibilities:

* Oversee chapter membership eligibility issues

* Lead the bylaws amendment process by considering, reviewing, editing and/or correlating amendments as suggested or appropriate

* Update the chapter’s bylaws to comply with changes made to the international bylaws by utilizing the chapter bylaws template created and updated by STTI headquarters (updated template is typically available in January of even-numbered years)

Leadership Succession Chair(Nominations Chair in Nu Rho)

Qualifications:

* Be an active member of the chapter

* Consent to serve in the position

Responsibilities:

* Develop members in organizational leadership roles across the span of their careers

* Mentor members to assume positions at all levels of the organization

* Oversee the selection of members who can provide the necessary leadership to achieve chapter goals and to meet the needs of members

* Manage the preparation, distribution and tallying of election ballots

* Notify all candidates (elected and non-elected) of the election results

* Note: Those serving on the Leadership Succession Committee are not permitted to be on the slate of candidates for officer or committee positions.

Publicity/Newsletter Chair

Qualifications:

* Be an active member of the chapter

* Consent to serve in the position

Responsibilities:

* Recruit candidates for research awards - locally and internationally. Assist them with the application process.

* Note: Those serving as the Research Chair, on the Research Committee or as any other chapter officer or chair are not eligible for research funding while in any appointed or elected positions.

Membership Involvement Chair

Qualifications:

* Be an active member of the chapter

* Consent to serve in the position

Responsibilities:

* Oversee the promotion of membership renewal and membership involvement.

* Manage the process of involving members in chapter committee membership.

* Oversee the development and maintenance of a new member mentoring program.

* Plan and implement an orientation for new inductees and multiple and transfer members.

* Inform membership about Volunteer Interest Profile (VIProfile) and encourage membership to submit profiles.

*Greet new members either in person, email, phone, or letter.

Awards Chair

Responsibilities:

* Oversee the process of developing, reviewing, revising criteria and funding for recognition awards and scholarships.

* Manage the process for reviewing and judging award and scholarship applications.

* Recruit candidates for awards and scholarships - locally, regionally and internationally. Assist with the application process.

* Ensure that all applicants are notified of judging results, selected or not selected. Inform award and scholarship recipients of the manner in which they will receive their award or scholarship.

* Coordinate preparation of entries for any regional or international awards in which the chapter wishes to make application.

* Encourage chapter members to apply for international awards.

* Note: Those serving as the Awards Chair, on the Awards Committee or as any other chapter officer or chair are not eligible for scholarships or other monetary awards while in any appointed or elected positions.

Philanthropy Chair (Fundraising)

Qualifications:

* Be an active member of the chapter

Responsibilities:

* Collaborate with the appropriate committee to evaluate chapter income sources, and determine financial needs above and beyond collection of member fees.

* Oversee the development of strategies for funding specific chapter projects as determined by the board of directors.

* Manage the implementation of projects and events that increase funds as well as the visibility of the chapter.

* Manage the philanthropy events and ensure that an effective publicity program is in place, through collaboration with the appropriate committee.

* Coordinate the donation of goods or services, if necessary, for the event.

* Solicit the general membership for participation in hosting the event.

* Participate in the philanthropy programs, activities and events along with members of the appropriate committee.

* After completion of the event, oversee the evaluation of the event in terms of number of participants, amount of money raised, etc.

Webmaster

Qualifications:

* Be an active member of the chapter

* Consent to serve in the position

Responsibilities:

* Collaborate with Nu Rho officers to obtain information to place on website.

* Manage the Nu Rho Website to be sure it is current and updated every month.

Celebrate Volunteer Sharon Fusco

Sharon Fusco, RN, MSN, Nu Rho, has been a strong leader in our chapter. Sharon is finishing her fourth year on the Nu Rho Board of Directors as our Treasurer. "Sharon is a dedicated officer with the best interests of the chapter in mind" exclaims Nu Rho President, Nancyruth Leibold.

Sharon also volunteers at her church to obtain "back to school supplies" donated for children in need to receive. In the summer of 2008, Sharon served on a committee for the US National wheelchair Olympic games held in Omaha, Nebraska. In June of 2008, Sharon received the Nursing Excellence Award from the Nu Rho Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau.

Wow! It is difficult to believe that it is fall already and we are into the thick of this
academic year’s chapter goals and projects! The Nu Rho Chapter-At-Large board of
directors have met and set the goals for our chapter for the next year:
1) Website actively maintained and updated 3-4 times per year with newsletter, officers
and contact information.
2) Maintain fiscal responsibility through investment and membership involvement
3) Co-sponsor educational opportunities with other community nursing organizations
4) Increase membership involvement by actively involving lapsed members and
seeking out community members
5) Continue to emphasize evidence based practice in the newsletter and evidence
based practice co-sponsorship
6) Participate/volunteer in a community event.

What: Assisting the Grieving Child
When: Monday, November 10th, 5:00-6:00 p.m.

In the past 2 weeks I’ve had 3 different people bring up the topic of license renewal for RNs coming up this
Fall. So that got me thinking about contact hours and how many I have saved in the past 2 years. It felt like
spring cleaning while I looked around for my CEU file folder at home, searched my office drawers, and looked
under the passenger seat in my car (I know you’ve been there too) looking for lost contact hour certificates.
For the moment, I’m coming up a few hours short. So the hunt is on. I need to find a few more convenient and
low cost options for some more hours. What I did was a “google” search for “free nursing CEUs” and I actually
found quite a few sites offering free contact hours.
So I wanted to share my results just in case you found yourself in the same situation. Think of this as a “product
review” from a magazine. The one where they try out the latest anti-wrinkle creams or sunless tanners and tell
you which one their intern (the poor soul who had to test them all) thought was the best.
I started out from the website http://medi-smart.com/freeceu.htm which is from a company called Medi-Smart.
Here I found a list of 17 different links all claiming to have free CEUs. So I tried out 2 different ones for my
“product review.”
The first one is I tried was titled “MMRW– Free continuing education from the CDC” found at http://
www2a.cdc.gov/ce/availableactivities.asp This is indeed part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
so it appears to be a reputable site to use. From this page there is a list of 18 free online “courses” you
can take for contact hour credit. I did need to register and create a login ID (which required giving them my
name, address, phone number, and email address). Most of the “courses” were about public health concerns
such as prevention of vericella, new recommendations on the HPV vaccine, HIV testing, and surveillance
guidelines for Smallpox vaccine adverse reactions. All of the courses had a link to written educational materials
(all be it quite lengthy) and a link to the post-test questions (on average of 8-15 questions per course). The
number of hours awarded ranged from 1-4 contact hours. I would personally rate the questions as moderate to
difficult, but considering the hours are free I thought it was worth the time. I completed 3 of the classes in
about 2 1/2 hours for a total of 5.8 contact hours. Rating 4 of 5 stars.
The second link I tried from the Medi-Smart site was found at http://www.teleflexmedical.com/elearning/
ucdlindex.php which is created by a company called Teleflex. I believe
this company sells/markets products by the brand name Atrium which
sells equipment like the Pleur-evac. The 1.5 contact hour “course” titled
Understanding Chest Drainage seemed more like a tutorial on how to use
their equipment, but it was interactive and kept my attention. It said the
$15 fee has been waived by Teleflex– so there is no cost to you. There
were 15 questions on the post-test and I would rate them as moderate difficulty.
It was fairly easy to find the answers in the written materials. After I
hit the submit button it gave me my score and the test ID number, but
there wasn’t a formal looking certificate to print. I also did need to give
them personal information such as my name, address, phone number, and
email address. Rating: 3 1/2 of 5 stars.
